There are a lot of questions to ask regarding both wines. Style you like, region and price point are just a few. For an affordable Pinot Noir fron California, you can't beat McMannis Pinot Noir (under $13). This is a Cabernert drinker's Pinot in so much as it is fairly big in body which is not typical. Syrah styles vary depending on where in the world it is grown. For a good rustic style, pick something from the northern Rhone. For more of a fruit forward style, Australia is your place. Try the shotfire Shiraz from Borossa (under $23). This wine alwats gets great ratings and in fact has been in the top 100 wines of the year by wine spectator.
